What is Shibari and Where Do I Start?
If you have found yourself here, curious about rope and not quite sure where to begin, you are in exactly the right place.
Shibari is one of those things that is difficult to explain and impossible to forget once you have experienced it. So let us start at the beginning.
What is Shibari?
Shibari is the Japanese art of rope bondage. The word itself translates roughly as to tie or to bind, but anyone who has spent time in this practice will tell you it is so much more than that.
Rooted in a centuries old Japanese martial tradition called Hojo-jutsu, Shibari evolved over time from a method of restraint into a deeply intentional art form. Today it is practiced all over the world as a form of connection, creative expression, meditation, sensory experience and , yes - pleasure.
At its heart Shibari is about the relationship between two people. The person tying and the person being tied. It is a conversation without words, built on trust, presence and an extraordinary level of communication.
Is Shibari the Same as Rope Bondage?
People often use these terms interchangeably and that is completely fine. Technically Shibari refers specifically to the Japanese style of rope work, known for its aesthetic knots, beautiful patterns and deeply intentional approach. Rope bondage is a broader term that covers any practice involving tying with rope.
At The Rope Temple we embrace both. Whether you are drawn to the art and aesthetics of traditional Shibari or simply want to explore rope in your own way, there is space for you here.
Why Do People Practice Shibari?
This is one of the most common questions beginners ask and the honest answer is — for many different reasons.
Some people are drawn to the aesthetic beauty of it. The patterns, the geometry, the visual artistry of rope on skin.
Some are drawn to the physical sensation. The feeling of rope, the restriction, the heightened awareness of the body.
Some are drawn to the connection. The profound intimacy of trusting someone completely with your body — or being trusted with theirs.
Some find it meditative. A space where the mind quiets and the body takes over.
And some simply find it fun. Playful, creative and unlike anything else they have tried.
There is no right reason to explore Shibari. Curiosity alone is enough.
Is Shibari Safe?
Yes ,when practiced with knowledge, care and communication. Like any physical practice there are things to learn and risks to understand. That is why education, consent and aftercare are at the absolute foundation of everything we teach at The Rope Temple.
Before you ever pick up a rope it is worth understanding the basics of safety , nerve placement, circulation, communication signals and what to do if something does not feel right. Our beginner’s guide covers all of this and is a great place to start.
The short version: go slowly, communicate constantly and never rush.
What Do I Need to Get Started?
Less than you think.
Rope: Start with soft cotton rope. It is forgiving, skin friendly and easy to handle. A single 8 metre length of 6mm cotton rope is all you need to begin. You can find exactly that in our shop.
A willing partner or yourself: Some people begin by practicing ties on their own wrist or leg to get a feel for the rope before working with a partner.
Education: Read, watch, learn. Take a class. Come to a workshop. Be a student of the practice before you become a practitioner.
Patience: Shibari rewards slowness. Do not rush. The rope will teach you if you let it.
Where Do I Actually Begin?
